"There is one beautiful baby in the world, and every mother believes she has it." - Chinese proverb

Actually, there are three. And I have all of them. Eat your hearts out!

  1. I don't know the rules in your state, but in our state you can fight (tooth and nail) for itinerant services in-home through the school district. I had actually made a strong point for Rex to have in-home speech therapy, explaining the safety of home in terms of therapy effectiveness for a newly adopted child and they agreed to do it before we decided to go a different route. I am sure you could argue for Geri in the same vein, saying she feels safest and most receptive at home, she would benefit most from knowing how to use the cane in her home (where she spends most time) first and so on. It's not easy getting these special services from the district, so make sure you know the law and your rights in your state and use them to your advantage.

  2. Viviane - I have to read the huge packet of rules and regs they gave me, but I did ask if there was any other way to get her services and they said no, because of her age. EIS stops at 3 years old, and that's the only route for in-home services through the school district. But you are right, I need to read and re-read the rules and find out if something can be done to force the issue.

In related news, I was looking online and found a video teaching proper cane techniques, and the NFB has a program where they will provide a free cane every six months. So I might just get her a cane and start working on it myself. I'm hesitant to have her enter preschool without having been introduced to it, since she can be so hesitant, if she's uncomfortable, to learning new things.
